Established in 1959, the H & H Restaurant in Macon, Georgia, counts as one of the country's finest soul food joints. Mama Louise Hudson still cooks at H & H just about every day. Located not far from the Big House Museum, where the Allman Brothers lived in the early 70s, H & H attracts everyone in the community from all walks of life.
Of course, the Allman Brothers Band were looked after by Mama Louise in their early days when five or six band members would eat from two plates. Once she discovered how poor they were she never let them go hungry. Later the ABB repaid Mama Louise by hiring her to cook for them. They traveled with vats of her black eyed peas. Besides the Allman Brothers, Molly Hatchet, Wet Willie, Chuck Leavell and every local Macon musician ate at H & H.
Photographs line the walls that include Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Dr. Martin Luther King, Otis Redding, Gov't Mule and many others. The H & H jukebox contains soul classics and southern rock anthems depending on a customer's musical tastes.
Today (Friday) the meat choices were fish, fried chicken, ribs or roast beef. I decided on the fried chicken with squash, rice & gravy and collard greens. On any given day you have a potential choice of at least ten or twelve vegetables. The cornbread tasted amazing, and obviously fresh along with everything else. I also ordered sweet tea with a lemon. My famous friend who wishes to remain anonymous ordered the fried chicken, squash and lima beans. When I went to the back to pay, I asked Mama Louise if I could take her picture and she said "Of course you can young man." She's a hero of the highest order...
