Paul Foster and his wife Doreen moved to Roswell in 1997 from Hilton Head, South Carolina. Two years later, they opened this venerable barbecue den. In 2000, they began hosting Nashville’s top songwriters on their small stage.
The place looks like an old barn from the outside, surrounded by a gravel parking lot in a quaint country corner gradually being encroached upon by urban development. Wooden benches sit outside on the front porch for those waiting on a table.
Great timing allowed my wife Jen, and our baby daughter, and I a quick seating. We both ordered the chopped pork platter. For her side orders, Jen chose garlic-buttered green beans and French fries. For side orders I selected the “Three Bean Baked Beans” and Brunswick Stew that we all shared.
They serve strong sweet tea with a large, fresh slice of lemon. For the record, this place displayed the swiftest service I ever remember receiving, especially on a crowded Saturday late afternoon.
The pork sandwich was served on crisp pieces of thick buttered toast. The Brunswick stew remains the best I’ve tasted in years. This place serves fantastic mustard sauce along with a very sweet and agreeable brown sauce. We picked only a couple bits of bark out of the succulent pork sandwiches.
There’s a faint taste of alcohol in the brown sauce, but the establishment does not mention this possible secret ingredient. Overall, an excellent place to eat. Check out the schedule for live entertainment. Next time, I’ll save room for the Chocolate Chip Banana Pudding.
