The Chitlin' Circut: And The Road To Rock 'N' Roll
Memphis writer Preston Lauterbach's first book--The Chitlin Circut: And The Road To Rock 'N' Roll--arrived in the mail on Monday. An upcoming interview with Lauterbach is on the way, but I wanted to write a quick dispatch on Chitlin' Circut this afternoon.
This definitive story outlines 'The Chitlin' Circut' where an African American subculture thrived in cities such as Indianapolis, Chicago, Atlanta, Macon, Houston, Memphis, St. Louis, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Tulsa and many others. Lauterbach outlines the historic and social fabric of America at the time in context of 'the circut', which originated in the late 1920s.
Lauterbach's vigorous prose weaves funny and tragic tales revolving around some of America's finest musical pioneers. Along the path, musicians that appear in the book include Walter Barnes, Big Bill Broonzy, Champion Jack Dupree, Lucky Millinder, John Coltrane, King Kolax, Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy, Earl Hines, Jay McShann, Louis Turner, Roy Brown, B.B. King, Ike Turner, Johnny Ace, Sax Kari, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Little Richard and James Brown. It's an amazing book, and I'm going to read it a couple more times before I interview the author...
