SEC Daily Fever: Richt Fires Martinez, Other Defensive Assistants

About ten days ago, we wrote how Georgia fans wanted some changes in Mark Richt's staff after a frustrating season.

The win at Georgia Tech finished the regular season on a high note, but the pain of a blowout at Tennessee and a home loss to Kentucky was too much to keep the status quo in Athens.

As expected, Mark Richt made those changes yesterday with the firing of three defensive assistants – defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, linebackers coach John Jancek and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris. The link above provides the ugly reality of the Bulldogs struggling defense:

 Under Martinez , the Bulldogs had a hard time keeping opponents from scoring. Since Martinez succeeded ultra-successful defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder in 2005, Georgia 's defenses have allowed increasingly more points each season: 14.6, 17.1, 21.0, 25.6 and 26.4 points per game, respectively, over the past five years. The past two seasons Georgia has allowed 34 or more points 10 times.

In the SEC, difficult decisions have to be made by well-compensated leader. This was not easy for Richt, but you have to improving in this league or you will be left behind. The decisions made this offseason by Richt will be paramount for UGA's success and his own job security.
