SEC Daily Fever: Georgia and Mark Richt Could be Staring at 6-6

Many around our Footprint (and the country) believe Les Miles is having the toughest week amongst SEC coaches, but you could argue that it's even worse for Georgia's Mark Richt right now.

We have written all season about the UGA defensive struggles, lack of a running game, and the lack of discipline while leading the league in penalties. After blowing a 20-6 halftime lead at home to Kentucky, the Bulldogs will have to beat in-state rival Georgia Tech to avoid a 6-6 regular season.

There have been other low points along the way, but Saturday’s second-half implosion against Kentucky may have been rock bottom. It was a microcosm of nearly every pitfall the Bulldogs have faced for the past two seasons, all squeezed into one half of football as the Wildcats outscored Georgia 28-7 in the second half to send Richt to his fifth loss of the season – the most he has ever experienced as a head coach or assistant.

“That’s how it goes sometimes,” Richt said. “I’m not thrilled with that, but it’s here, and we’ve got to decide what we’re going to do about it. I’m pretty confident our guys will get back, review what happened and quickly move on to prepare for Georgia Tech.”

The Yellow Jackets remain the final obstacle on Georgia’s regular-season slate, and Tech will no doubt be a big favorite to win, leaving the Bulldogs staring at a .500 record at year’s end for the first time since 1996.

It was unthinkable at the beginning of the season that Richt's job security would come into question. Many Dawg fans want both coordinators gone, but that may be a hard decison for the head coach to make.

Richt will have a chance to turn things around, but you can't help but notice how the situation in Athens is beginning to resemble the Fulmer and Tuberville scenarios that ended last season with their firings.
