Ten Great Songs You May Have Missed

I was driving down the Interstate today between Greenville and Spartanburg and listening to my iPod, just letting the “shuffle” setting take control. Suddenly Dickey Betts started up on a song I had not listened to in quite some time. A great song fromThe Brothers’ Dreams box called “Nancy.” It got me to thinking about a few other great songs that some of you may or may not be aware of, so I thought I would present for your consideration, ten really good tunes you may want to check out. Hope you dig ‘em.

1.“Nancy”   Dickey Betts, from The Allman Brothers Band's Dreams Boxed Set (1989). A rare track from the great Mr. B. Just a great country song with a memorable melody and catchy lyrics. I have been loving this one for many moons.

2. “Broken Pieces”  Tommy Talton, from his album Someone Else’s Shoes (2008). Former Cowboy member Tommy Talton i simply one of the most talented people I have ever known. His songwriting is unsurpassed, his guitar work his on par with his old friend Duane Allman and his vocals are always down right pleasing. This simple acoustic guitar ballad is one of the most beautiful love songs my old ears have ever heard.

3. “Texas On My Mind”  Toy Caldwell Band; from the album Toy Caldwell (1992, Cabin Fever, reissued as “Son of The South” on Blue Hat in 2000) This beautiful ode to the Lone Star state was sung on the album by bassist Tony Heatherly, and features some of Toy’s one of a kind, melodic thumb picking.

4. “My Whole World’s Upside Down”   Artimus Pyle Band, from their debut album, (1982) Just a totally original and cool rocker from the Skynyrd-alum Artimus Pyle.


5. “Better Days”   Bekka and Billy  (1996) Guitarist Billy Burnette, son of country music star Dorsey Burnette and nephew of another country/rockabilly star, Johnny Burnette, he  replaced Lindsey Buckingham for a while in Fleetwood Mac. While there, he met Bekka Bramlett who was then the lead singer of the band. Bekka is the daughter of Delaney and Bonnie. Their album together is pure magic and this is one of its best tracks.

6. “Brothers of the Southland”   Blackhawk (from “Spirit Dancer” 2002) The first time I heard this Henry Paul song I was blown away. It’s a great tune that recalls the glory days of the Southern Rock era, with shout outs to friends like Toy and Tommy Caldwell. He re-recorded the song with his all-star band Brothers of the Southland.

7. “Back to the Well”   Lee Roy Parnell (from “Back to the Well,” 2006) Lee Roy is an amazing artist. A great singer, songwriter and smokin’ guitarist. This gospely tune is right up my alley.

8. “Going Down the Road Feelin’ Bad,” Marshall Tucker Band (from “Gospel,” 1999)  The MTB gospel album kind of fell through the cracks, but is a mighty fine release, and their version of this old standard, often played by The Grateful Dead back in the day, is great.

9. “Somebody Like Me,” Randall Bramblett (from “Rich Someday” 2006) Bramblett is another stellar songwriter. The former member of Sea Level who also recorded with many others, including Cowboy, is always good, but this song just happens to be my favorite.

10. “Destruction,”  Marshall Tucker Band (from “Southern Spirit,” 1992) The album I thought was going to put the MTB back in the Top 40 came close with “Stay in the Country.” This song, written by Rusty Milner, is a great anti-drug blues rocker.
