SEC Daily Fever: Meyer Faces Tough Choices Between Florida and Family

Posted: Jan 05, 2010

Some important decisions are now at hand for Urban Meyer and the Florida athletic department. After the Gators destroyed an overmatched Cincinnati team (dealing with their own coaching issues) 51-24 in the Sugar Bowl, the reality set in that the near future for the UF coaching staff is very uncertain.

Meyer’s half-day resignation and subsequent change of mind leaves the Florida fan base wondering if the ultra-successful head coach will be on the sideline in Gainesville next year or not. There really is no “leave of absence” in the busy SEC boss schedule, so we’ll all have to wait and see what exactly that term means for Meyer.

If he tries to delegate more responsibility, he’ll have to do some hiring first. Wide receivers coach and recruiting ace Billy Gonzales has left for LSU, while defensive coordinator Charlie Strong is now the head man at Louisville. Another defensive coach, Vance Bedford, is headed to Louisville with Strong to become the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator.

So now Meyer must decide what’s best for him and the Florida football program. Some believe he must make the difficult choice which “family” comes first. That’s a very stressful decision for a man and coach struggling with health issues. Meyer seems to need some time off, but he has told many prospective recruits that he will be with them next season and beyond. UF fans, and the rest of the SEC, will now wait to see how this unusual drama plays out.
