Relic From The Past: Circle Sound

On January 19, 2007, The Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson and the North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson played a show at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom with a band they formed called Circle Sound. The band also consisted of Crowes bassist Sven Pipien, New York drummer Bill Dobrow and keyboardist Rob Clores. Patti Smith and Santo Fazio served as special guests. The six-string chemistry between Robinson and Dickinson obviously led to Dickinson becoming the Black Crowes’ lead guitarist in 2008.

Plowing through stacks of recorded live shows in my storage space today I came across this relic from the past. The sound quality of the show is amazing. Dirty blues serves as the best way to describe the group’s sonic dynamic. They opened the show with Neil Young’s “Everybody Knows”. Rich and Luther alternated singing lead vocals and playing lead guitar throughout the evening. Next, Rich sang Bob Dylan’s “The Man In Me”. Luther sang “Bang Bang Lulu” and “Mississippi Kid”.

Circle Sound also covered The Band’s “Rockin’ Chair”, Ry Cooder’s “Boomer’s Story” and Funkadelic’s “Mommy, What’s A Funkadelic?” A personal highlight from this show included a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Just Want To See His Face”. Luther sang the Circle Sound version, but when The Crowes played the song on this last tour, Rich sang the lead vocal. The Robinson-Dickinson guitar playing on this Stones cover proves incandescent…

They covered two Rich Robinson songs “Leave It Alone” and “Veil”. Then, Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight”. Patti Smith joined the band for an improvisational “Smoke Signals”. Circle Sound then played dark & dank numbers such as “Mean Old World”, “Spoonful”, “.44 Blues” and “Mean Town Blues”. For an encore, they weaved the instrumental Black Crowes tune “Sunday Night buttermilk Waltz”, Rich’s “Places” and The Rolling Stones’ “Stray Cat Blues” into one cohesive electric thread.
