Born in Savannah, Georgia, during 1970, Shannon Runquist began painting at a young age. After attending high school in Brunswick, Georgia, she graduated from The University of Georgia. Shannon's paintings evoke a timeless aesthetic. Her credentials, honors and exhibits are too long to list in this dispatch, but her paintings have made an indelible mark on the southern art community. A resident of Charleston, South Carolina, Shannon's work can be viewed at the Horton Hayes gallery.

Among other paintings, Shannon is currently painting a picture for the newsman Tom Brokaw. I’ve known Shannon for over 22 years. It’s always more interesting to know an artist aside from their work. Her eye remains sharp as ever. Yesterday I asked her what was her intention when she paints any picture. She replied: “In some regards I would say the paintings are an extension of an emotion I am feeling at the time I am painting them but remain ambiguous. If a landscape, it would be trying to convey the atmosphere surrounding me. A still life painting will often tell a story or have a subject that is of common interest to many viewers. Either way I always paint what I know or a place I have been. The experience must be real for it to translate without it being trite. If a painting evokes an emotion and a viewer crosses the gallery to take a closer look then I am left with a feeling of fulfillment.”

Shannon collects antiques that inspire her to paint. In a recent interview with American Art Collector, she explained her fascination with antiques: "Antiques are definitely connected to my past, so I love painting them. And living in a city like Charleston, there's history everywhere you look. It's around me all the time. A lot of these objects have gone by the wayside. So yes, I have breathed new life into them. It's fun to try to update them and give them a contemporary feel. It's like a mix of the past and the present--my hope is that they'll be around long after I'm gone."

Recently her work was displayed at the Salmagundi Club for the Juried Exhibition in New York City. In October of this year, She served as a Artist in Residence at the Balsam Mountain Preserve in North Carolina. Her paintings have drawn attention from publications such as Carolina Arts, The Lantana Life, American Art Collector and various other periodicals. Shannon studied with the inimitable artists such as Rhett Thurman, David Leffel and Carolyn Anderson while also painting in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

In the near future I will write a full-length feature/interview on the life and paintings of the indelible Shannon Runquist. Many of her paintings are viewed in the Horton Hayes Gallery where subject matter includes landscapes, still-life, low-country scenes and architectural depictions rendered in oil, pastel or watercolors.
