This time we run down the Ten Greatest Bass Guitar Players of The Southern Rock Era. And boy oh boy, it was hard to narrow the list to Ten. Let me know what you think. Agree or disagree? Come on, I can take it. I'm a big boy.

Lists like these are always interesting and subjective. So, without that in mind, I would disagree on a few of the picks. There is no way that I would put Riff West or Banner Thomas on the list while leaving out Lamar Williams. With his work with the Allman Brothers Band and Sea Level, Lamar's bass riffs were fluid and memorable, with integral bass lines that you can recall instantly in your head years later. Another bass player that would give a couple of the players on the list a run for their money is Andy West of the Dixie Dregs. If the consideration is musicianship and drive, Andy was badass, and good enough to be a big part of the Dregs being nominated for the Grammy Best Rock Instrumental Performance award in 1979. DH

Thanks for the comments. It's always hard to limit it to the top "ten." And Greenville, I am all about Woody. It's just that we are only including players from the original era of Southern Rock, 1969 - 1980.

What is a bass players list with out Woody? Whgen he and Warren were with the brothers there was not a tighter band around. Great list but you can't leave Woody out.

How could you possibly leave out Paul Goddard of the Atlanta Rhythm Section? He was so good that he actually had bass solos on studio cuts. I enjoy reading the lists.

How cool to give some attention to the unsung rock hero, the bass player. Tommy Caldwell was indeed the best and my memories of him playing live are some of my happiest. Thank you Gritz, for making me smile and cry at tyhe same time.
