ACC Daily Fever: Duke Improving Under Cutcliffe

Posted: Nov 03, 2009

Coming into the season, Virginia Tech looked like the clear favorite in the Coastal Division, with Georgia Tech and Miami also having a shot. The Yellow Jackets have seized first place, but a surprising team now stands in second.

The Duke Blue Devils are that second place sqaud in the Coastal after three straight league wins. David Cutcliffe's crew is 5-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Duke looked ready for their usual rough season after losing the opener to Richmond. They will need to win seven games to go to a Bowl because of playing two FCS opponents, but Cutcliffe has them believing it’s possible.

Georgia Tech and Miami will be tough wins, but this week's game at North Carolina and a home contest to end the season against Wake Forest will give the Blue Devils a shot to make their first Bowl since the 1994 season.

Duke's second-year coach addressed the unique situation for the 'football' Devils to be dealing with recognition and success:

"They're going to hear it in class. They're going to hear it walking across campus. They're going to hear it from their family," Cutcliffe said. "People are happy, and thank goodness they are; it beats the heck out of the alternative."
