…Widespread Induction & Where The Buffalo Roam…
After a few days without any dispatches I thought I’d send a few lines. Sometimes you need to let all the facts, events and stories simmer before you can stab them on the table. Of course, circumstances of life also dictate when stories can be told. First, I’d like to send out a tip of the hat to Michael “Buffalo” Smith—my Swampland brother in arms—and his great run with Billy Bob Thornton along with Buffalo’s roaming adventures in Muscle Shoals, Alabama last weekend. Billy Bob Thornton and Buffalo jamming together just brings a five mile smile…outstanding ol’ boy…
In other news, the mighty Athens, Georgia, band Widespread Panic asked me to write their biography for their induction into The Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 20. I felt honored they would ask, and I accepted the indelible request to preserve their legacy aside music greats such as Otis Redding, James Brown, Gram Parsons, Blind Willie McTell, Ray Charles and many more with a high-degree of last-call truth. I don’t want to spoil it yet, but word I get the individual inducting Panic at the ceremony proves a beacon of light in the music industry…especially The South. More on this artist’s identity and The Hall of Fame Induction soon…
Speaking of Athens, Georgia, I’ve become friends with great songwriter Bruce Burch. Bruce now runs the music business school at my alma mater, the University of Georgia. Bruce’s songs have been recorded by Faith Hill, Reba McEntire and the Oak Ridge Boys among many others. I’ll see Bruce on the weekend of August 15-16, when I make my way over to Athens again to interview him and attend Randall Bramblett’s CD release party. Speaking of the Classic City--the Georgia Bulldogs are ranked #1 in the nation as the dawn of football season begins to awaken…
Among many obligations and distractions, my (longest) interview with The Black Crowes’ keyboardist Adam MacDougall, hell or high water, will be up in less than a week (thanks for coming to the rescue Andrea). It’s an insightful, in-depth perspective from a member of one of the South’s greatest bands in the last 20 years. The Black Crowes are out on the road now and their shows prove beyond formidable in any era of the group’s history. Big Crowe Medicine come soon...
Other impending interviews wait in the wings. The list of upcoming topics would take up the next hour or two, and since I really need to get back to the actual task…I’ll bid y’all a good night. I won’t take a week off from dispatching again for a while, so be sure to check back tomorrow…
See yins…
