Born on March 9, 1930, in Fort Worth, Texas, Ornette Coleman won a Pulitzer Prize today for his latest CD, Sound Grammar. Coleman stands as an innovator in jazz music with a musical influence steeped in R & B. His first recording took place in 1958.
Sound Grammar, recorded live one night in Italy during October of 2005, emerges as Coleman's first album in ten years. Coleman experimented with various musical styles over the years including collaborations with the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Pat Metheny, Roland Jackson, Don Cherry and Jimmy Garrison.
Sound Grammar proves worth adding to the collection. Look for the Swampland review soon. These nine songs contain five new Coleman compositions. This award marks the first time a music recording won a Pulitzer. James Calemine
