Terrapin Brewery On The Rise
The Athens, Georgia, brewery Terrapin Beer Company was founded in 2002. Owners Brian Buckowski and John Cochran decided to name their brewery after a Grateful Dead album titled Terrapin Station.
Terrapin's first brew--Rye Pale Ale--won the American Pale Ale Gold Medal at the 2002 Great American Beer Festival. Now the Terrapin arsenal includes Rye Pale Ale, Golden Ale, Hop Karma Brown IPA, Hopsecutional as well as Seasonal Brews like Sunray Wheat, Pumpkin Fest and Moo-Hoo. Terrapin's Monster Beer features Rye Squared, Wake 'N' Bake, Big Hoppy Monster, Gamma Ray and Monk's Revenge.
In tribute to the venerable Athens Music hall, Terrapin created The Georgia Theatre Sessions, a series of commemorative beers that represent eras of The Georgia Theatre such as The Iron Tankard, Double Feature, Sound Czech and Hoptaneous Combustion. Recently, Terrapin's Pumpkinfest brew was named the Number One Pumpkin Beer in the U.S. by Beerinfo.com.
For next weekend's Georgia vs. Auburn football game, Terrapin will host a 'Stache Bash', and there will be awards for those with the most creative facial hair. This weekend, Terrapin hosts a chili cook off for the Athens Humane Society. Terrapin's sentiment can be found in their mission statement:
"Since they were going to be making unique beers, Spike and John knew from the beginning that Terrapin Beer Company should be located in a city as distinctive as their brews. What better place than Athens, GA? Both Athens and Terrapin have a great love of music, are committed to the environment, and practice living life to the fullest."
Cheers,
