Pre-Review First Listen: Drive By Truckers’ Go-Go Boots

On February 15, the Drive By Truckers officially release their latest studio album, Go-Go Boots. I received my advance copy yesterday, and just gave it a first listen this afternoon. This is only a pre-review dispatch, but I think Go-Go Boots might be my favorite Truckers release since The Dirty South.

David Barbe produced Go-Go Boots in Athens, Georgia. Yet, these songs emit a Memphis-Muscle Shoals country-soul sound. Every song is a gem, and I’ll get to them all later, but I’ve never heard Patterson Hood’s voice so emotive as on the Truckers cover of Eddie Hinton’s “Everybody Needs Love”. They also render Hinton’s “Where’s Eddie” with bassist Shonna Tucker singing.

In the Go-Go Boots liner notes Hood writes: “It’s the movie version. It’s not better than ‘real life’. But for a couple of hours, ‘real life’ stops and we get to tell this story. Not quite how it really happened. But hopefully a little more entertaining.”

These Go-Go Boots songs evoke vivid images...

More to digest,

James Calemine
