Arhoolie Records Celebrates 50 Years

Chris Strachwitz, 79, owns Arhoolie Records. The label, founded in 1960, has issued 400 albums, and more than 6500 songs of some of America’s most resonating roots music. Most of the music on Arhoolie Records was recorded by Strachwitz…

On February 4-6, Arhoolie will celebrate its 50th anniversary at the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse in Berkeley. Guests will include Ry Cooder, Country Joe McDonald, the Campbell Brothers, Taj Mahal, Treme Brass Band and others. The Arhoolie label specializes in blues, folk, jazz, Cajun, Tex-Mex, country, Zydeco and gospel music.

Strachwitz helped revive the careers of Bukka White, Lightning Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb and Fred McDowell. In his book, Chronicles Volume 1, Bob Dylan wrote that Arhoolie Records was the place “where I first heard Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Charlie Patton and Tommy Johnson.”

Arhoolie’s latest release is titled Hear Me Howling! Blues, Ballads and Beyond. This 4 CD collection includes a 136-page book, 38 previously unreleased songs and 150 rare photographs. Taj Mahal recently spoke about Hear Me Howling!: "Long time coming. The most exciting documentation of this great music in the last 25 years. And not only will you be able to read and see, you'll be able to hear and see, too. Enjoy!"
