Saying Goodbye is Hard
Posted: Jan 13, 2011It is with a truly heavy heart that I report the passing of one of Southern Rock's finest guitar players, Tommy Crain. Tommy was a 15-year veteran of The Charlie Daniels Band, having co-written many CDB classics including "The Devil Went Down To Georgia."
For the past few years Tommy fronted The Crosstown Allstars, who recorded a single studio album and had a live record ready to go at the time of his passing,
Beyond all the credits and obvious talent, Tommy Crain was a good man with a heart the size of Tennessee. He was always first in line when Gritz staged benefit concerts like Gritzfest and Gritzfest II, and happily obliged when I humbly asked him to play on my own albums.
Tommy was more than a star in my eyes, he was a role model and a dear friend. This one is really hard for me to take, folks. I loved this man dearly.
God bless all of Tommy's family, his wife and brother Billy and all the extended CDB and CTA families. A memorial is being scheduled.
On another note. This is my final post for Gritz. I have enjoyed these 13 years of Southern Rock, but it is time for me to move on. I am writing two music history books and a book of Southern gothic horror fiction - kind of a redneck Stephen King. I will also be writing about other great music. Most of you know I am also a fan of everything from B.B. King to KISS, and I truly feel I have said all I have to say about my beloved Southern Rock. I am so saddened to hear of Tommy's passing. What a truly great player. I had always heard he was an equally great guy and you have confirmed it here. Thoughts and prayers are with Tommy and his family and friends. Michael I also want to thank you for the years of fine work you have done here.
