Last night, The Black Crowes completed a 5-night run of New York City at the Best Buy Theater. The Crowes are into the final leg of their “Say Goodnight To The Bad Guys” tour before they take an “indefinite hiatus” for at least the year of 2011.

The Crowes’ New York City shows began on Halloween. On the heels of Croweology and Before The Frost…Until the Freeze, the Crowes play an acoustic and electric set each night. The dynamic allows the band to delve into more obscure original and cover material from their repertory. On Halloween, the Crowes played “Evil Eye”, Syd Barrett’s “Lucifer Sam” and John Lennon’s “Yer Blues”. The rest of the evening's songs were timeless originals.

On the second night, the Crowes covered Bob Dylan’s “Meet Me In the Morning.” They haven’t played that song since 1996. They also rendered The Rolling Stones’ “Just Want To See His Face” and Marvin Gaye’s “Don’t Do It”. They played two new songs—“Smile” and "East Virginia Blues”—as well as original gems such as “Garden Gate”, “Bring On Bring On”, “Exit” and “Feathers". They also played Gram Parsons’ “Hot Burrito #1” & “Hot Burrito #2” along with a tune Parsons used to sing, William Bell’s “You Don’t Miss Your Water”. The Crowes always championed Parsons’ music. They recorded “She” on Croweology.

Drummer Steve Gorman conducted his killer sports program from The Big Apple on Friday. That evening they played “Good Friday”, “Better When You’re Not Alone”, The Stones’ “No Expectations”, “Thorn In My Pride” and “Wiser Time”. The electric set included “Movin’ On Down The Line”, “Sometimes Salvation”, The Band’s “The Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down” and Lowell George’s “Willin’”.

Last night—Saturday—counted as the final NYC show, and the Crowes left no stone unturned. The acoustic set contained “Roll Old Jeremiah”, Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You”, “What Is Home”, “Girl From A Pawnshop”, a new tune “Oh The Rain” and “Soul Singing”. Electrically, John Lennon’s “Give Peace A Chance” served as the opening number. Notable original material last night included “Seein’ Things”, “My Morning Song”, “Only A Fool” and “The Band Played On”. The evening’s cover songs were Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle”, The Stones’ “Torn & Frayed” and “The Last Time” as perhaps an indication of looming hiatus…

After 20 years, The Black Crowes continue to prove they rank as a vital, rock & roll locomotive. After several more shows--including their hometown of Atlanta in a couple of weeks--the Crowes travel out West and prepare to say adios…
