Southern College Football - Week 10 Themes

LEAD STORY

What an old-fashioned Southern soap opera we have on our hands. I’m sure by now you’ve read (or at least heard about) the ESPN story regarding the recruitment of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. The dual-threat quarterback has taken the SEC by storm this season, but he now faces controversy for the second time in three years. Former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond told ESPN that a “representative” for Newton informed him it would cost a six-figure payment to sign the talented signal caller. Newton transferred from Florida after theft allegations in 2008, and he was being recruited out of junior college this offseason. What complicates the story even more is that Newton's father, Cecil Newton, is a pastor of a church in Newnan, GA. There are rumors that extra funds were received by the church over the last few months.

With the story coming from a Bulldog angle, there is an obvious implication that Auburn must have paid the amount to secure the services of the Heisman frontrunner. The Tigers’ brass has denied any wrongdoing, so we will all have to wait for the sordid details to come out piece by piece. The thing we do know is that this scandal will put a cloud over the end of another exciting SEC season.

There are so many questions that arise when these types of allegations arise. Are they true at all? Did Auburn pay the supposed freight to sign Newton? Did Mississippi State walk away upon hearing of the aforementioned six-figure payment, or are they now just the bitter loser of a tough recruiting battle? Is this an isolated case or are these types of things happening all over college football? Does Mike Slive have control over the SEC?

Hopefully the answers to these questions will surface quickly. Auburn will face the same type of investigation that found their rival Alabama guilty of paying six-figures to prized recruit Albert Means a decade ago. Most fans assume that many players are getting some money on the side, but cases with this much (alleged) money are very rare. We should all be patient and let the details come out in due time.

Unfortunately, the Auburn-Mississippi State-Newton controversy has taken the focus off the field. We should be concentrating on a pair of stellar games this week: Alabama at LSU, as well as Arkansas at South Carolina. The Tigers’ defense was torched by Auburn on the ground, so they will face a major challenge in Alabama’s one-two punch of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson. The Tide still has a shot at the national title, but visitors know it’s never easy in Baton Rouge. Steve Spurrier’s bunch is still looking for their first East division crown, and they will face a tough test from Ryan Mallett and the Hogs’ passing attack.

Big 12

Three losses at home to UCLA, Iowa State and Baylor? A record of 2-3 in league play and 4-4 overall? That doesn’t sound like the Texas Longhorns, but that’s the reality in Austin right now. Obviously Mack Brown has enough wins and credibility to maintain confidence through a rare down season, but there are ‘Horns fans wondering how so many top recruits can be so inconsistent over the last month.

The good news for Texas is that they are close to an agreement with ESPN to distribute the Longhorn Network on cable systems beginning in the fall of 2011. The deal is rumored to be for ten years and worth $12 million annually to the school.

The team who beat Texas last week, Baylor, will now try to win another tough road game at Oklahoma State. These two offensive juggernauts are battling for the Big 12 South crown and should light up the scoreboard in Stillwater.

ACC

Virginia Tech maintained their unblemished ACC record Thursday night with a 28-21 home win over Georgia Tech. Every other team in the Coastal division has at least two losses in league play, so the Hokies are heavy favorites to make it to the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte.

Who is their most likely opponent for conference supremacy? It looked like Florida State for six weeks, but now NC State can control their path to a first-ever berth in the league’s title tilt. The Wolfpack will need to continue the momentum they gained with their huge win over the Seminoles last week, and Tom O’Brien’s crew heads to Clemson this Saturday. This is the type of game where State has slipped up in recent years, so their performance on Saturday will tell us a lot on their potential to win the division.
