Last night proved memorable. A singular evening transpired at a new independent bookstore in Athens, Georgia, called Dog Ear Books. Dog Ear Books was open for years in Madison, Georgia, and now they call Athens home. This week they’ve hosted various events to coincide with their grand opening. It’s a hip bookstore…

North Carolina-born writer Mark Kemp—author of Dixie Lullaby—read last night at Dog Ear Books. When I arrived with Danny & Eric from Bloodkin, I saw Mark as soon as I walked in the door. When I walked up to him, he handed me Keith Richards’ new book, Life, and said: “Read the first line…”

Keith’s book is another story, but he was in the air last night. Stay tuned for review. Before Mark even began to read, Eric already bought one of the three copies of Life in the store. I also ran into an old friend, Steve LaBate, and we counted six years since we last crossed paths. Mark read various parts of Dixie Lullaby, and for me I especially enjoyed the Muscle Shoals section. Not much more needs to be said about a book the writer is still talking about six years after publication. After Mark read, we stepped outside and conducted a short interview where we discussed his new book, Dixie Lullaby, the fine line between creation and oblivion as well as a few other topics. Mark even asked for a drag off my organic American Spirit cigarette. Since he’s not a smoker, the gesture forever endeared him to me as a soul brother. In a couple of days, I’ll publish my insightful interview with Mark Kemp.

My brothers-in-arms, Bloodkin’s Daniel Hutchens & Eric Carter played a few songs next. They sounded great, and they played a new, long tune called “God’s Bar”. Then I got up and read a couple of pieces with them like we used to do in the old days…The Fandango Brothers…when we lived together and recorded me reading stories, poems or lyrics as they backed me up with guitars. Last night, Danny played an acoustic, Eric played a Les Paul and the Barefoot Hookers' guitarist Ty played acoustic guitar while I read “A Jezebel’s Kiss & Jack O Lantern Smile” and “A Riddle’s Hint”. Nothing but friendly mojo drifted throughout Dog Ear Books last night. Not a minute went to waste under that roof. I anticipate Dog Ear Books will enjoy continued success in their new home. Same goes for all the other players…
