On October 7, keyboardist T. Lavitz died in his sleep at home. He was 53. He began studying jazz piano at the age of 7. As a senior at the University of Miami’s School of Music, T. Lavitz was asked to join The Dixie Dregs.

The Dixie Dregs were a talented group from Augusta, Georgia, who eventually signed to Phil Walden’s Capricorn Records. The Dregs broke up a few years later. T. Lavitz went on to play with Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, and other jazz-influenced rock & rollers. In 1991, T. Lavitz joined Widespread Panic for their first record on Capricorn. Lavitz left Panic at the end of the year because The Dixie Dregs were re-grouping. Panic invited Lavitz back a few times through the 90s to join them onstage.

Through the years, T. Lavitz played with Jimmy Herring, Alphonso Johnson and Billy Cobham in Jazz Is Dead. Lavitz also jammed with Little Feat’s Richie Hayward and Kenny Gradney, Nils Lofgren, Vassar Clements, Jeff Sipe, Oteil Burbridge, Jefferson Airplane, Steve Morse and Mother’s Finest.
