Southern College Football - Week 5 Themes

LEAD STORY

Alabama and Florida will meet in Tuscaloosa Saturday in a battle of the last two National Champions. It’s been over two years since the Gators lost a regular season SEC game (Ole Miss, September ’08), and it’s been even longer for the Tide (Auburn, November ’07). These two powerhouses have ruled the SEC over the last couple of seasons, and their respective coaches have to get much of the credit. Along with being solid gridiron tacticians, both Urban Meyer and Nick Saban have made recruiting the number one priority of their programs. The results have followed, and both coaches represent the ‘CEO type’ that it takes to succeed at the highest level of college football.

With UF and Bama setting the current bar, many fan bases around our Swampland Footprint are asking the question: do we have the right ‘CEO’ for our program? That seems especially true at Gerogia right now, as the Bulldogs have lost thier first three league games. Fans around the Peach State are questioning the beloved Mark Richt like never before, and the national media reacts by painting them as out of touch, with unrealistic expectations:

“In all my travels, I'm not sure I've ever come across a fan base whose self-perception is so far from reality. Georgia fashions itself a national power in the vein of Ohio State, USC, et. al., based primarily off one glorious three-year run 30 years ago with Herschel Walker (and some kick-butt years in the 1940s)”.

Really?! So UGA is not supposed to have high expectations with their tradition, facilities and recruiting base? The reality is that the fan bases in our region, especially season-ticket holders, often know their program better than the media. National pundits will throw out statistics like “Richt won 90 games in 9 years”, but the fan base knows that the Bulldogs haven’t made an SEC Championship Game appearance since 2005 and do not appear to be threatening that fact any time soon.

Georgia’s Richt is facing the same type of doubts that lingered around Phil Fulmer, Houston Nutt and Tommy Tuberville after a decade at their respective SEC programs. The national media called those fan bases unrealistic, but time has showed that a change was needed at each of those schools. Sometimes what worked a decade ago, or even five years ago, will not work currently in the hyper-competitive SEC.

Les Miles of LSU faced the same type of scrutiny entering the 2010 season. After a rare two-loss National Title in 2007, his Tigers went 8-8 in conference play the next two years. Things are good in Baton Rouge after a 4-0 start, but that could quickly change when LSU faces Florida, Auburn and Alabama in an upcoming four-week stretch. Bengal Tiger do not want to fall behind Bama and Auburn in the SEC West, so Miles will have his work cut out over the next six weeks.

Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina squad started the season looking like a contender for the East Division. Unlike his days at Florida, the ole Ball Coach seemed to be finding success in the ‘recruit, run the ball, and play great defense’ philosophy. But when faced with adversity in the fourth quarter at Auburn, the old Spurrier came back as he started his own quarterback controversy. Still with a great shot at winning in a tough environment, Spurrier put a true freshman signal caller into the game and into an almost impossible situation in which to succeed. Is the ole Ball Coach the type of ‘CEO’ that can lead the Gamecocks to major success and quiet the skeptics? South Carolina fans are waiting to see the answer in a year in which they feel their Gamecocks could win the East.

ACC

It looks pretty likely that North Carolina’s Butch Davis is in major trouble, with assistant John Blake linked to major payments from NFL agents. Once again, this type of activity may have happened in the past but technology has changed the game. We’re not condoning any of the alleged conduct, but questions have to arise when you are getting caught at ‘old-school cheating’ with new social media. Can Davis survive? It’s hard to see to decision makers in Chapel Hill letting this go.

Clemson turned their season around last year with a thrilling overtime victory at Miami. Now, the Tigers come off a bye week ready host the revenge-minded Hurricanes. Randy Shannon can reenergize his fan base over the next two weeks when his club plays Clemson and Florida State. While both of those teams are in the Atlantic Division, they may be Miami’s two toughest league games. Shannon knows this is the season for his bunch to finally make an ACC Title tilt, especially with Coastal foes Virginia Tech, North Carolina and Georgia Tech struggling in September. If the ‘Canes do not make it to Charlotte this season, Miami fans have every right to question Shannon as their leader.

BIG XII

With Texas losing 34-12 at home last week to UCLA, there seems to be some national luster lost on this game. That being said, the Red River Rivalry is still one of the best games in the country each year. Texas’ Mack Brown has a very demanding fan base, and they are currently wondering why the Longhorns cannot run the ball and how the Pac-10 Bruins ran it down their throat. Many of those concerns can be alleviated by a win over the Sooners.

Oklahoma has their own set of questions, even with a 4-0 start. The Sooners only beat Utah State, Air Force and Cincinnati by a combined 12 points, but they did show up huge in their only “big” game against Florida State. Many Oky fans wonder if Bob Stoops still has the ‘big game’ touch that was so evident a few years ago, or if that has disappeared with all of the BCS losses. Once again, the Sooners fans will relax quickly with a victory at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday.
