SEC Media Days Attract Huge Attention

The SEC tops the nation when it comes to college football so it should be no surprise that the "Media Days" in July draw so much interest. Media members from all over the country marvel at the three day spectacle that has gridiron fans counting the days until the season begins. With Alabama and Florida favored to win their respective divisions for a third straight season, the conversation at this year's media days turned mostly to off-the-field issues. Last year it was the silliness of ‘who left Tim Tebow off their All-SEC ballot’ and Lane Kiffin’s antics that dominated the headlines. This year, the talk turned to a more serious subject of NFL agents recruiting (and possibly paying) college players before their season is over. 

Former NFL coach and now Alabama boss Nick Saban was the most critical of rogue NFL agents:

"I don't think it's anything but greed that is creating it right now on behalf of the agents," Saban said. "I hate to say this, but how are they any better than a pimp? I have no respect for people who do that to young people. None. How would you feel if they did it to your child?"

While some questioned the source of the criticism, there is no doubt that some desperate NFL agents are a huge threat to the college game. USC has been heavily sanctioned after the Reggie Bush scandal, and many SEC coaches live with the same fear that the same type of activity can occur on their campus. It is impossible for coaches to police their entire roster for 24 hours a day, so Saban's contention that the NFL needs to help the college game in this area rings very true. The NFL, which benefits greatly from the development of its talent on and off the field in college, will have to crack down on rogue agents to help solve the problem. Andy Staples of SI writes of how powerless SEC heavyweights (Saban, Meyer, Slive) are against the money of professional agents:

Three powerful men, essentially powerless to fight a group that works in the shadows and passes cash to players more seamlessly than the greasiest booster ever dreamed. In almost any other facet of college football, the coaches of the past two BCS champions and the commissioner of one of the nation's most powerful and lucrative conferences could effect change with a wave of the hand or with a nod of the head. But against the agents, the financial advisors and the runners, they can do nothing.

After Day 1, the conversation turned back towards SEC themes like surprise contenders and new coaches. Arkansas was picked second in the West division, and many think Steve Spurrier's South Carolina club could contend in the East. Additionally, there was a ton of positive sentiment for the fact that Lane Kiffin is in California and that the Tennessee program is now led by SEC legacy Derek Dooley. Not only will there be a lack of publicity antics with Dooley, the new man in Knoxville has embraced the great tradition at Tennessee:

Alabama and Florida should lead the way while a group of four or five others will try to ascend to the top. With the SEC being the ultimate pressure cooker for coaches, stalwarts like Mark Richt of Georgia and Les Miles of LSU will be closely watched by their fan bases. And new leaders at Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt will try to improve their respective programs.
