ACC Teams See Mixed Recruiting Success

We wrote a month ago about last year’s mediocre season for ACC football and how the conference would look for improvement in 2010. The obvious place to start improving was with a big Signing Day, and this year’s results were pretty average. The league’s only Top 10 national class belonged to Jimbo Fisher and Florida State . When the Bobby Bowden situation was finally decided, the ‘Noles recruiting momentum seemed to grow and grow. If FSU can build their talent base back to the level of a decade ago, they will return to the top of the national scene and will raise the ACC’s profile as well.

Next up in the league were Clemson, Virginia Tech and Miami, who all hauled in classes ranked in the back half of the Top 25. Dabo Swinney has put together a quality recruting staff at Clemson, and Frank Beamer's crew seems to always bring in a quality group of athletes and coach them up. Miami had a solid Signing Day, but nowhere near the Top 5 class of 2008 (the Miami Northwestern Senior High crew) or even the Top 15 group of 2009. Randy Shannon must catch back up to the Gators and Seminoles in the Sunshine State if his Hurricanes are going to return to national prominence.

North Carolina, N.C. State, Maryland, Georgia Tech and Boston College were next in the recruiting rankings, with classes rated in the 30th to 50th range. The Tar Heels had a wild finish on Signing Day, gaining a couple of big-time prospects while also losing a few. With Butch Davis' recruiting prowess, UNC looks like the best candidate from this list to move into the Top 20 on a consistent basis. North Carolina will have a loaded defense this season but to elevate the program to being a contender year-in and year-out, Davis will need to do better than 30th in recruiting.

Virginia, Wake Forest , Duke rounded out the conference in the rankings. None of those schools are really expected to have amazing classes, but the Cavaliers have produced a number of top NFL prospects over the years. New UVA coach Mike London will need to improve his talent base by competing for players both in-state and throughout the region.

There is no doubt that the ACC is hurt by the powerful SEC recruiting in the same geographical areas. When Tennessee finishes 5th in their conference (9th overall) but ahead of ACC leader Florida State (10th overall), you can see the huge gap between the two leagues. Teams like Miami and FSU (and either a Clemson, UNC, or both) must improve their talent and get back on the national stage with Virginia Tech if the ACC is going to elevate its play and reputation.
