ACC Daily Fever: Johnson Not Sitting Still at Georgia Tech

Despite winning the ACC, Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson is not sitting still in trying to build the Yellow Jackets into a consistent winner. The Tech offense has been very effective (except in the postseason) the last two seasons, but the defense struggled mightily down the stretch of the 2009 campaign. Consequently, defensive coordinator Dave Wommack has been fired. That’s quite a statement by the head coach, who just led Tech to their first conference crown since 1990.

Many programs that just won the league, finished 11-3, and went to the Orange Bowl would be sitting back and accepting praise for a job well done. But Johnson knows that his defense is an issue, and he took quick action. League teams will get more and more familiar with Tech’s running offense, so Johnson and company cannot rely on having to score 30+ points every game in order to win.

It will be an interesting offseason in Atlanta. Top receiver Demaryius Thomas has announced he will leave early for the NFL Draft, and there will probably be others to do the same out of the Yellow Jacket’s talented junior class. Also, the name rumored to be the next defensive coordinator is none other than former Virginia head coach Al Groh. One thing is for sure: Paul Johnson is looking to build a winning program and is not resting on any laurels after his first ACC Title.
