ACC Daily Fever: Recruting Must Improve to Compete with the Top Conferences

The AP All-American teams (first, second, and third) were released this week, and the ACC had six players make the one of the squads. League champ Georgia Tech had two players on the list, including first-team defensive end Derrick Morgan, while there was one each from Miami, Florida State , Virginia Tech, and Clemson. That seems like a decent total until you consider that the Big 12 had a total 18 players on one of the three teams, and the SEC had 19 (including 11 first-team All-Americans).

That disparity shows why a great player like C.J. Spiller, even though he was voted first-team 'All-Purpose', was not in the Top 5 for the Heisman vote. He probably deserved an invite to Manhattan for the Award ceremony, but it becomes a difficult argument when Spiller only faced one first- or second-team All-American defender (Morgan) in league play.

The key to increasing the talent base is simply recruiting, and some of the newer staffs appear to be doing well in that area. FSU's Jimbo Fisher and Miami's Randy Shannon should bring in Top 10 classes each year by just being in Florida. Butch Davis has recruited very well at North Carolina, and Dabo Swinney looks to be off to a solid start at Clemson. Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are also in football-rich states.

These six programs mentioned above must continue to recruit at an SEC/Big 12 level to reap the BCS bids and Awards of the top conferences.
