ACC Daily Fever: Foster a Fixture at Virginia Tech

Posted: Dec 15, 2009

It has become an annual December news item at Virginia Tech—other top programs are interested in defensive coordinator Bud Foster. With him on Frank Beamer's staff since 1987 and the coordinator since 1995, most Hokies fans probably were not too worried about losing the ’06 Broyles Award winner.

However, Georgia contacted Foster this week for a job that would have a ton of appeal. Would he consider working in the SEC a better avenue to becoming a head coach?

That seemed like a question Foster at least considered. Consequently the Virginia Tech administration acted quickly, as he was rewarded with an extension that includes an annuity payment if Foster is in Blacksburg five more years:

"I've been approached (for jobs) — the strongest one was Georgia — and Tech came through with a package that's going to keep me here," said Foster after Monday's practice at Tech in preparation for its Dec. 31 meeting against Tennessee (7-5) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. "I'm pleased with that."

That is good news for Hokies fans as their defense has been ranked in the Top 15 of the nation in nine of the last twelve seasons. Foster has been the architect of that success, and you have to wonder if the five-year annuity will lead to being the head man at Virginia Tech when Frank Beamer retires.
