SEC Daily Fever: Ingram Wins Bama's First Heisman

There aren’t many “firsts” left with the University of Alabama’s football history, especially now that Mark Ingram became the Tide’s only Heisman Trophy winner in Manhattan Saturday night.

With former offensive stars like Johnny Musso, Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler, David Palmer and Shaun Alexander, that’s a pretty amazing fact.

Ingram’s narrow win was the closest vote in Heisman history, and he definitely benefited from the Midwest vote being split between Texas’ Colt McCoy and Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh. Some in the media thought his chances had slimmed after being shut down in the Iron Bowl, but Ingram's performance in the SEC Title Game moved him back to the front of voter's minds. The Bama running back gave a very emotional acceptance speech that was influenced heavily by the reality that his father was just miles away in a New York City jail.

As Alabama prepares to play Texas in the National Title Game, Ingram will now try to buck the recent trend of Heisman winners having bad results in Bowl games. USC’s Matt Leinart in 2004 was the last Trophy winner to see his team win in the postseason.
