ACC Daily Fever: Fisher Building his own staff at FSU

Posted: Dec 11, 2009

Jimbo Fisher will take over for Bobby Bowden following the Gator Bowl, but the new coach has already been making a statement in Tallahassee. Earlier this week, he announced the firing of four assistants including former Seminole Dexter Carter. After his running backs had success this season, the FSU standout from the late 80s was disappointed with the news:

"I enjoyed coaching them," Carter said. "I feel like we were – I guess the bottom line is – productive. But it doesn't matter. Because [Fisher has] got to [put together] a staff in a manner in which he sees is the best fit as he moves forward. And he doesn't owe me an explanation, which I didn't ask for one and he didn't give."

Carter's replacement will be former Tennessee and Auburn assistant Eddie Gran, who is known as a recruiting ace in South Florida. The heavy emphasis on recruiting has paid off recently for Fisher with the verbal committments of linebacker Jeff Luc and cornerback LaMarcus Joyner, both five-star prospects fro the Sunshine State.

To get the Seminoles back to where the program was in the 90s, Fisher knows he must get the top players in-state, with many of those looking more towards Gainesville in recent years. The transition may be painful for some FSU fans, but it looks like the new coach is off to a solid start in replenishing the talent base.
