SEC Daily Fever: Bama Barely Escapes in Thrilling Iron Bowl

Posted: Nov 27, 2009

Much like Texas on Thursday night, Alabama got a scare from their in-state rival but also remained unbeaten with a 26-21 last-minute win. Auburn came out of the gate throwing caution to the wind, but could not hold on to an early 14-point lead. The Tide still trailed by one in the 4th quarter until scoring the game-winning TD with 1:24 to go. Nick Saban’s bunch will now enter the Title Game undefeated against a Florida team that should ready to play after watching the close calls of Bama and Texas.

Other league games this weekend will settle the jumbled-up bowl picture for the SEC. LSU and Arkansas are most likely playing for a Cotton Bowl bid, with the loser probably headed to the Liberty Bowl. Nothing against the Bluff City, but that’s a pretty steep drop-off in the Bowl pecking order.

Kentucky hosts Tennessee in a series that has not seen the Wildcats in the win column since 1984. The winner will likely play on New Year’s Day in the Outback Bowl (Monte Kiffin returns to Tampa?), with the loser headed to the Chik-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta.

The best player in Mississippi argument will be part of the Egg Bowl tradidtion in Starkville this Saturday. Dexter McCluster will try to lead the Rebels to a win and a Capital One Bowl berth, while Anthony Dixon hopes to go out a winner on Senior Day for the Bulldogs.
