ACC Daily Fever: UNC Defense Dominating In November

Posted: Nov 23, 2009

After North Carolina's crushing 30-27 loss to Florida State in late October, frustration was high in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels had blown a 24-6 secong half lead and had dropped to 0-3 in ACC play (the league's only winess club at that point). The fan base knew that Butch Davis had recruited well, but there were questions if UNC could become a consistent 8-9 win team each season.

Now in late November, North Carolina has won four in a row and any doubts on the program's direction are being silenced. The biggest factor for the current winning streak has been the Heels' ball-hawking defense. UNC forced six turnovers in Saturday's 31-13 over Boston College. They have nine interceptions in the last two games and scored two touchdowns for the second game in a row. Junior corner Kendric Burney is on his way All-American honors, with six interceptions returned for 200 yards and two touchdowns on the year. A week after Burney had three picks against Miami, safety Deunta Williams pilfered three passes at BC.

Butch Davis now has his team in position for one of the league's upper-tier bowls. If UNC can win a revenge game at NC State and a bowl game, they would reach the 10-win mark for the first time since 1997-- Mack Brown's last season in Chapel Hill.
