ACC Daily Fever: Georgia Tech's Low BCS Status Is A Casualty Of A Weak ACC

With Georgia Tech in the Top Ten and only having one loss, ACC fans would like to think that the Yellow Jackets have an outside shot at the BCS Title Game with a few breaks. However, two different BCS experts both say that they don't see Tech getting any higher than their current #7 in the standings.

Jerry Palm of CollegeBCS.com states a common perception that will frustrate Yellow Jacket and league fans:

“Tech’s problem is there’s a general lack of respect for the ACC. Is it better than the Mountain West [which includes TCU]? Yeah, it probably is. But I’m not sure what the voters think of Georgia Tech, compared to those schools ahead of them.”

Tech fans will argue that they have beaten two SEC teams (and potentially another in Georgia), but the fact that Vandy and Mississippi State are two of the three worst teams in that league will not help the cause much.

The unfortunate reality is that the ACC just does not have enough marquee out-of-conference wins that could help them climb into the Top 5 of the BCS.  They've made strides in 2009, but the ACC still needs to have at least four top teams that can compete head to head with the SEC and the Big 12, the two power conferences today.

Without a better league perception, a one-loss ACC team (especially with a conference loss) remains an unlikely BCS title game participant.
