SEC Daily Fever: Officiating Issues Creates Negative Vibes For Top League

Posted: Nov 10, 2009

It’s the story that won’t go away- another week, another game where bad officiating dominates the league conversation.

The SEC office declined to comment on the botched interception ruling against LSU in the Alabama game, the latest in a series of missed calls that has scarred the conference season. While Mike Slive’s office may have no comment on the league’s referees, seemingly every national and regional columnist has something to say about them.

Some believe that the SEC officials have lost their credibility, while all of the bad calls have built up a lot of conspiracy talk. Others believe the refs may suffer from a lack of confidence after all of the national and local criticism, while ESPN’s Chris Low concludes on the controversy with the officials: “It’s become life as we know it in the SEC”.

The bottom line is that the attention of America’s top conference is going to the wrong place. Instead of focusing on having the top two teams in the nation, league fans are forced to deal with “what if” and “what’s going on here” scenarios each week as the referees continue to miss key calls in the biggest games. Slive needs to focus on improving the officials, not silencing coaches who state what the fans plainly see on the field each week.
