ACC Daily Fever: Georgia Tech Survives Wake Forest Scare

Posted: Nov 09, 2009

What a decision.

Trailing 27-24 in overtime against Wake Forest, Paul Johnson had his Yellow Jackets go for it on 4th and inches from the five-yard line. Most coaches would have tried for a field goal and played for the second overtime, but Johnson is not most coaches. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt snuck ahead for the first down, and he followed that with a game-winning touchdown run on the next play as Tech defeated the Demon Deacons 30-27.

Johnson’s running attack is anything but conventional in BCS-level football, and his gutsy call definitely went against the grain. It’s even more amazing that the Tech coach had the confidence that his offense would convert after failing four times in regulation on fourth down.

Johnson’s decision paid off, and now a win at Duke is all that stand between the Jackets and a spot in the ACC Title Game.
