ACC Daily Fever: Andrews leaves an amazing legacy at FSU

As expected, longtime Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of this season. And what a legacy he leaves in Tallahassee. Andrews started coaching at FSU in 1984, and he was one of the top reasons that Bobby Bowden’s Seminoles became a dominant program in the late ‘80s and throughout the ‘90s. FSU won national championships in 1993 and 1999 with the defense leading the way. In fact, the defense on the '93 national championship allowed less than 10 points per game.

Under Andrews’ direction, Florida State had an All-American cornerback for eight straight years from 1987-1994. In 1996, he won the inaugural Frank Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. The players he developed are a who’s who of College All-American defenders: Deion Sanders, Derrick Brooks, Terrell Buckley, Marvin Jones, Jamal Reynolds, etc.

Unfortunately for Andrews, the current Florida State defense (109th nationally in total defense) has been his career worst. This ‘Noles defense ranks last in the conference in both rushing defense and pass defense.

Despite the ’09 struggles, Andrews will be remembered as one of the top assistant coaches ever in college football. He and Bowden built a major college power in Tallahassee, and his list of defensive pupils is just amazing. Now, the question for Florida State fans becomes whether or not Bobby Bowden will join Andrews in retiring.
