SEC Daily Fever: Georgia Coaching Staff Under Fire

There is some extra heat radiating from Athens these days, as Mark Richt tries to regroup his Bulldogs after being blown out by Tennessee. AJC columnist Mark Bradley called Georgia’s 45-19 loss in Knoxville “the worst, perception-wise if not number-wise, of Richt’s career”.

Dawg fans were already frustrated with defensive coordinator Willie Martinez coming into the season, and his unit allowed 45 points to a Tennessee offense that had struggled mightily in their first five games.

Couple that with an inconsistent offense that never crossed the Vols’ 35-yard line last Saturday (16 of their 19 points were on defense/special teams), and you have a rabid fan base that wants some answers.

Richt used to have a nice coating of teflon while his coordinators caught the fans' wrath, but now Bulldog fans are wondering when Richt will pull the plug on Martinez and his offensive counterpart, Mike Bobo.

Despite highly-ranked recruiting classes, the statistics for Richt’s 2009 club are fairly alarming: 75th in total defense, 97th in total offense, and 118th (out of 120) in turnover margin. It’s actually easy to argue that the Bulldogs are lucky to be 3-3. That concept will not work much longer ‘Between the Hedges’.

Becoming Lane Kiffin's first SEC win didn't help either.  Tennessee is seen as being in rebuilding mode.  Bulldog fans expected Georgia to be well ahead of Tennessee at least for the 2009 season.

It seems this may be the new SEC annual trend - a perennial power falling into deep struggle.  Last year, it was Tennessee and Auburn which led to both schools hiring new coaches. 

We're not saying that will happen in Georgia because Mark Richt's record is too strong.  However, Richt will likely have to take a hard look at his coaching staff.  Although it is often cruel, assistant coaches are a head coaches' protection.  They recruit and they coach.  They make sure that your team is as good as it should be.

The issue with Georgia is that their talent is perceived to be as good as any of the top SEC teams.  When that talent doesn't equate to wins on the field, questions will arise.
