ACC Daily Fever: The Coastal Division Shaped By Battle of Tech Schools

Posted: Oct 13, 2009

It seems to be a weekly theme around the ACC; league coaches trying to prepare for Georgia Tech’s vaunted running attack.

This week, Bud Foster of Virginia Tech has the opportunity to match schemes with Paul Johnson. Foster has been known for years as one of the best coordinators in the country, and his defense has shut down many a quality quarterback. But the Jackets’ offense presents a whole new challenge, as they get ready to host the Hokies after totaling 401 rush yards last Saturday at Florida State.

Frank Beamer’s crew won this game 20-17 last year in Blacksburg, despite being outgained 387-247. Turnovers and penalties held Georgia Tech’s score down, and Virginia Tech knows they must play better this year in Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets could make the Coastal Division a three-team race with a victory, and that might leave the ACC’s stronger half looking like last season’s Big 12 South (with the three top teams all having one loss). If the Hokies can claim an important road win, they can set their sights on running the table and a BCS berth.
