ACC Daily Fever: Gator Bowl Dumps The ACC For The SEC

It’s been a tough year for the national image of the ACC and their quest to be perceived with the big boys of college football. Ever since the opening week (N.C. State lost to South Carolina, Virginia to William & Mary, Duke to Richmond, Maryland to Cal, and Wake Forest to Baylor, and Virginia Tech to Alabama), the league has endured loss after frustrating loss.

The news for the conference got even worse this week with the announcement that the Gator Bowl is leaving the ACC for the SEC. Starting in 2010, Jacksonville (a city that has hosted the league Title Game) will welcome an SEC vs. Big Ten matchup to town.

Gator Bowl chairman Dan Murphy says the following:

"This is tremendous, getting the SEC. Jacksonville is an SEC city and I hope people will really support this game with the SEC as a partner.”

That quote has to sting the ACC leadership that has been waiting for the Florida State’s, Miami’s (until this year), and Clemson’s to start pulling their weight and bringing the conference back to respectability.  As we've constantly written, the ACC has teams in SEC country that have the ability to compete (Clemson, Georgia Tech, FSU, and Miami), but these teams have not done so consistently since the ACC expanded to 12 teams.  

Now we see that a major bowl has given up waiting.  This makes it a third New Year's Day Florida bowl game (including the Capital One and Outback) that features a Big 10 vs SEC matchup.  

Why?  They know it works.  Combine the SEC's passion with the Big 10's desire to get somewhere warm in January, and you have a successful Florida bowl game.  Having the ACC as a bowl partner means a high likelihood of Wake Forest, Maryland, or Boston College - none of whom travel well.

The sad thing is that the ACC has no one to blame but themselves for their own mediocrity.
