ACC Daily Fever: Georgia Tech Carries the ACC Flag into Starkville

Posted: Oct 01, 2009

Georgia Tech has a chance to do the conference proud Saturday when they travel to Starkville to meet an improving Mississippi State squad.

One aspect working in the Yellow Jackets' favor is their change last week to a base 4-3 defense, instead of the 4-2-5 scheme they used in their first three games. Against North Carolina, Tech limited the Tar Heels to just 17 yards rushing on 18 carries and held UNC to 154 yards of total offense.

Paul Johnson’s team will need that type of defensive performance again, as MSU’s Anthony Dixon has run for 321 yards in the three games that he’s played. State should by hungry after barely losing to LSU when they came up just short at the goal line in the final two minutes.

Georgia Tech can still be a solid factor in the league race if their defense plays as well as it did against North Carolina. A road win over an SEC foe will build some serious momentum in the middle of the season.

This game is a very good litmus test for the ACC.  Tech is a top half ACC team on the road playing an improving, but bottom-half SEC team.

As the ACC continues to battle perception issues nationally and regionally, Georgia Tech has a great opportunity to help this slightly wounded conference save face.
