SEC Daily Fever: Gamecocks Embrace the Spotlight While the Rebels Wither

South Carolina played a physical game led by their relentless defense and took down #4 Ole Miss 16-10, Thursday night in Columbia in a classic SEC headknocker. While we want to give the Gamecocks credit, the Rebels were also just simply not ready to live up to their lofty ranking.
Being the favorite can be a tough role for programs that are not used to having such high expectations, and that seemed to be the case with Houston Nutt’s club. Both teams had youth and inexperience, and it's likely that Ole Miss had better personnel. The problem seemed to come from their lack of big game experience.
It was an opportunity for Jevan Snead and Dexter McCluster to show their skills on national television. Instead, it turned into the Eric Norwood show as the South Carolina defense held Snead to 7-21 passing for only 107 yards.
For Ole Miss, it was a reminder that SEC football is about knowing how to win the close games. No matter how much of a talent advantage your team might have, you still need to know how to win. That takes experience.
Still, this was a nice win for Steve Spurrier, who seems to have his young team playing pretty solid ball early this season. Spurrier has been trying to build a winning mentality for years at South Carolina. Their 3-1 start deserves notice.
There is still a long way to go in this young season. Let's hope that both teams learn from this game - Ole Miss with how to start and finish and South Carolina with how to keep this kind of fight in their team for an entire season.
