SEC Daily Fever: Gut Check time for Georgia

Posted: Sep 09, 2009

SEC Daily Fever is the top SEC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

After dropping the opener at Oklahoma State, it is a huge week for Georgia as they try to avoid an 0-2 start when they battle South Carolina Saturday. While many were concerned about defensive improvement after a rough ’08 season, it now looks like the offense is the issue in Athens.

It was a promising start to the game for fifth-year senior Joe Cox, who led the Bulldogs on an 80-yard TD drive on the opening possession. However, the first half concluded with four punts and a fumble.

Things did not improve in the second half as UGA was only able to muster a third quarter field goal. While new Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Bill Young had a quality gameplan, Georgia’s ten points and 257 total yards is just not enough against a defense that was routinely torched a year ago.

Mark Richt plans on sticking with Cox as his signal caller despite the shaky 50% completion game in the opener. If the Bulldogs have to start a carousel at quarterback, it could be a very up-and-down season for a club that always has high expectations.
