ACC Daily Fever: Miami-FSU Barely Salvages An Opening Week Full of Bad Losses

Posted: Sep 08, 2009

ACC Daily Fever is the top ACC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

You know it was a bad week when columnists are already calling you the “Athletically Challenged Conference”.

It started on Thursday with the N.C. State offensive thud and continued Saturday with two losses (Virginia to William & Mary, Duke to Richmond) to I-AA (FCS) schools. Additionally, Virginia Tech got worn down in the marquee matchup with powerful Alabama, Maryland was blown out on the West Coast, and Wake Forest lost a home contest to Baylor.

The opening week carnage has the ACC looking much closer to the Big East than to the SEC or Big 12. The conference should still have solid teams in Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, UNC, and Florida State, but there is a huge gap between most of the programs in this league and the big boys of college football.

The one glimmer of hope might be the Miami-FSU game which looked like one of their classic rivalry games from a decade ago.  If the top six in the ACC can compete with national BCS powers, it won't really matter if the bottom six can't compete with the tier below.
