SEC Daily Fever: Spurrier Lets Defense Rule Over Wolfpack

Posted: Sep 04, 2009

SEC Daily Fever is the top SEC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

It wasn’t pretty, but South Carolina relied on their defense for a hard fought 7-3 victory at North Carolina State.

Regardless of the score, a regional rivalry win on the road in the opener is a great thing. The defense, led by All-SEC linebacker Eric Norwood, played well all night despite not having three key linemen.

However, many Carolina fans may have their reasons for concern, as once again the offense struggled to score. That fact, coupled with the inability to convert two short field goals, doesn't make the Gamecocks of 2009 remind anyone of Spurrier's Gator teams of old.

Although it might be the antithesis of Spurrier ball from the past, perhaps an older and wiser Spurrier recognizes that the key for the Gamecocks in 2009 will be to play great defense and mistake-free offense that borders on conservative

Rather than designing an offensive game plan that challenges your own QB more than the opposing defense, Spurrier seems to have realized that his offensive magic works best when it is only used judiciously like the late game pass by QB Stephen Garcia that clinched the game.

After all, in the SEC, it remains "survive and advance."
