Although the NCAA did find a violation in the Alabama case involving receiver Julio Jones and running back Mark Ingram, both have been declared eligible for the Virginia Tech game after paying restitution.

That’s a huge relief for Nick Saban’s crew, who will now have their two best offensive players on hand to help break in a new quarterback and left tackle.

Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster has made a career out of confusing signal callers, so the fact that new QB Greg McElroy will have the security of Ingram and Jones is paramount for a Bama squad trying to win their second straight Georgia Dome opener over an ACC opponent.

Alabama started their amazing 2008 run by thumping Clemson in Atlanta.  Saban and the Tide know they must beat the Hokies in order to stay in the early BCS discussion.

This game and the OSU-Georgia game will either confirm the SEC's football dominance on opening weekend or give critics grist for the proverbial mill all season long.
