SEC Daily Fever: Auburn Opener Provides Dilemma for Vince Dooley

Posted: Sep 02, 2009

SEC Daily Fever is the top SEC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

An interesting scenario presents itself for SEC legend Vince Dooley in the Auburn-Louisiana Tech opener.

Though he’s obviously more known for his coaching career at Georgia, Dooley is an Auburn alum. So he’s pulling for the Tigers, right?

That might usually be the case except for the fact that Tech’s coach is his son, Derek Dooley.

In Gene Chizik’s first game, Auburn had better be ready to play.  Dooley’s team took down Mississippi State in last season’s opener. Louisiana Tech went on to an 8-5 record and their first Bowl win since 1977.

If Tech battles Auburn closely, expect Derek Dooley to continue to grow as a hot name in bigger coaching circles come this off season or next.  Whether SEC, ACC, or Big 12, Dooley appears poised to make a leap in the near future.

The southern college coaching tree grows wide and deep.  There are always fun stories like this that lurk below the surface making every game meaningful.

Honorable Mention SEC Headlines:

Bama defensive end shot, but okay

Dixon status still unknown at Mississippi State
