ACC Daily Fever: Will The Injury Bug Derail Virginia Tech's Season?

Posted: Aug 24, 2009

ACC Daily Fever is the top ACC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know.

It’s been a tough preseason camp for Virginia Tech, especially at the running back position. It got very scary over the weekend when Ryan Williams, the only healthy runner out of the Hokies’ top four, went down with an ankle sprain. Running backs coach Billy Hite says he has not seen anything like the injury epidemic in his 30+ years of coaching.

Quarterback Tyrod Taylor only threw two touchdowns a year ago so the running game - along with their consistently stellar defense - is obviously the key for Frank Beamer’s club to maintain their perch at the top of the ACC. The offense will definitely be tested early when the Hokies meet Alabama in the season opener.

Virginia Tech has been singled out as one of the ACC's 2009 bright spots, a team with a chance to compete nationally.  Although most accept injuries as a valid excuse, it won't help the ACC if the Hokies don't look competitive against Alabama opening week.

It will only serve as a reminder of Clemson's poor Atlanta performance against Alabama last year.
