ACC Daily Fever: Biletnikoff List Shows Unfortunate Lack of ACC Playmakers

Posted: Aug 21, 2009

ACC Daily Fever is the top ACC story of the day. Disagree? Let us know

Although it’s good news for Jacoby Ford, it’s not so good news for the conference. The Clemson wide receiver has been named to the Biletnikoff Award Watch List and deservedly so. However, the bad news for the league is that Ford was the only ACC representative on the list of 37.

As the ACC tries to get more national acclaim, a lack of outside playmakers will hurt the league’s image unless some new stars emerge. The quarterback play around the league should be fairly solid, so it’s time for the outside threats to develop and help the conference’s profile when compared to the SEC and Big 12.

Swampland Sports remains optimistic about the future of ACC football.  It has the fundamentals to be competitive with the SEC and Big 12.  However, the schools lying in the heart of playmaker country, specifically Florida State and Miami, need to start recruiting and developing players like they did in decades past.

Despite Butch Davis doing a first rate job in Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech's reemergence, Virginia Tech quiet excellence, and new hope at Clemson under Dabo Swinney, the long term success of ACC still rests on Florida State and Miami returning to national power status.

Until those two schools escape their recent cycle of mediocrity, the perception of ACC football will likely remain in that state as well.
