Buffalo's Top Ten List For The Week of July 27, 2009

Posted: Jul 27, 2009

Here’s a new feature for GRITZ, Buffalo’s Top Ten list. Every week I will run down the ten albums, books, movies, TV shows -whatever- that have me excited. My hope is that by sharing these obsessions with you, maybe you'll find something new that you like that maybe you didn’t know about before.

1. THE BELLVILLE OUTFIT (Band)
bellevilleoutfit.com
An amazing band I discovered just today when my buddy Tom Whitten told me about them. The Austin band includes three former members of the DesChamps band from my home town of Spartanburg, SC. One of the guys is the nephew of the late great Champ Hood. Their music is unique, with influences from big band to bluegrass, rock and blues to country.

2. TOES - ZAC BROWN BAND (Video)
One of my favorite bands these days. I love the country meets Jimmy Buffet feel of this song. Plus you gotta love a band who sings about “my toes in the water, my ass in the sand.” See the video.

3. PLEASE CALL HOME: THE BIG HOUSE YEARS  (DVD)
Amazing documentary on the Allman Brothers Band’s Macon, Georgia home “The Big House.” Soon to be the home of the Allman museum Review coming soon.

4. NURSE JACKIE  (TV)
Former Sopranos star Edie Falco rules as a pill-popping infidel of a nurse in a busy ER. Great characters. I love the dimly lit Zoe character. (Showtime)

5. ORPHAN  (Movie)
I was afraid it was gonna be “The Omen with a girl,” but it was better than that, with a pretty nifty twist at the end. It’s a small world after all... There’s something wrong with Esther. No kiddin.'

6. THE WHISPER OF SERPENTS - A. LAWRENCE HASKINS (Book)
A great new mystery novel I am currently reading. A new author who is a master of character development. Review to come.

7. KPIG  (Radio Station)
KPIG in Freedom, California can be streamed live on your computer, and they play some of the best music anywhere. from John Prine to Marshall Tucker to The Boxmasters.

8. BILLY BOB THORNTON ON REAL TIME (Video)
Billy talks about The Boxmasters with Bill Maher on HBO.

9. TAKE THE HIGH ROAD - SILVER TRAVIS  (CD)
Outstanding cd from Spartanburg, SC band Silver Travis who are on their way to the top. Lots of Marshall Tucker influence, yet totally original.

10. MOVIE TRAILERS ON YOU TUBE (Website)
A GREAT place to view trailers from ll the upcoming movies. Link.
