Jimmy Hall, Artimus Pyle, And Other Southern Rockers Band Together For Dixie Tabernacle

There has been an abundance of “all star” Southern Rock groups over the past few years. Some of them stay the course, while others fall by the wayside, often due to scheduling conflicts. Well, there’s one band that I sincerely hope keeps it together to record an album and tour, and that is a group called Dixie Tabernacle.

I first heard of them from Jimmy Hall at one of his shows I attended. Then I got a call from another friend, Lee Bogan, telling me I needed to check them out. I am really glad I did.

Dixie Tabernacle is a Southern Rock project that blends sounds reminiscent of The Allmans, Marshall Tucker, Skynyrd and Wet Willie all together into one pot, combining elements of rock, jazz, blues, country and gospel to make a Southern Rock and Soul stew.

They have a few songs on their MySpace site, and I suggest you have a listen. Besides their originals, they have done a rocking cover of Marshall Tucker’s “Bound and Determined,” Neil Diamond’s “Kentucky Woman,” (also recorded by Deep Purple) and their debut single, an amazing take on Jerry Reed’s “Amos Moses,” featuring Lee Bogan on swampy guitar.

The lineup contributing to Dixie Tabernacle is pretty amazing. On vocals is Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie, Jeff Beck); Vocals: Doug Phelps (Kentucky Headhunters); Vocals: Thane Shearon (Cold Truth, APB studio); Saxophones: Buddy Leach (George Thorogood); Drums & Guitars: Larry Goad; Drums & Percussion: Artimus Pyle (Lynyrd Skynyrd, APB); Bass: Steve Ray Anderson (Dr. Hook featuring Ray Sawyer, Phil Stacey); Bass: Robert Green (Nashville Session musician); Guitars: Bruce Pearson (Roy Orbison); Slide Guitar: Jack Pearson (Allman Bros, Jack Pearson Band); Guitars & dobro: Ryan Bullington (Keith Urban); Guitars: Lee Bogan (Joe Diffie, Ronnie McDowell, Dr Hook featuring Ray Sawyer); Acoustic Guitars: Harry Graham (Nashville Session musician); Steel Guitar: Mike Daly (Hank Jr.); Piano: Jim "Turbo" Kirby (Roy Orbison); Fiddle & Mandolin: David Russell (Nashville Session musician); Background singers: Vicky Carrico, Dana McVickee, Rod Vailancourt.

Now, I know all of these players won’t play live all at once, but I am sure Larry Goad will assemble a great lineup when they play out live. Meanwhile, the album they are working on should be amazing. The single "Amos Moses" will on iTunes in June and the CD will be out this Fall. I can hardly wait.
