Panthers Making Every Effort to Win Now

It all seemed to be falling into place for John Fox’s club last season. Coming off a losing 2007 campaign where Jake Delhomme only played three games, Carolina rediscovered their physical running game identity in 2008 and won the NFC South. At 12-4 and the #2 seed in the NFC, the Panthers and their fan base saw the team having a great shot at their second Super Bowl berth in franchise history. And then a giant thud-- the Arizona Cardinals came to Charlotte and crushed those Super Bowl dreams with a 33-13 beatdown. Whether it was the Jake Delhomme's turnovers or a porous defense, there was plenty of blame to go around.

Looking ahead to this season, one thing is clear: the Panthers' management wants to win immediately and the future can wait. Last year they traded their 2009 first-round pick to move up and select tackle Jeff Otah (good move). Without that first-round pick this year, the Panthers would have to wait until pick #59 to improve the team. That wait was too much for the group trying to win now, so the Panthers traded their 2010 first-round choice to move into the #43 slot and draft Florida State pass rusher Everette Brown. They also went defense at #59 with Troy safety Sherrod Martin as Carolina tries to improve a unit that ranked only 18th in total defense. Additionally, they added SEC stalwarts Corvey Irvin (DT/Georgia) and Captain Munnerlyn (CB/South Carolina) later in the Draft.

Although the defense seems to have a new leader in linebacker Jon Beason, there is an issue to be dealt with in leading sack man Julius Peppers (14.5 sacks in '08). The offseason was filled with rumors of trades and possible contract extensions as the veteran end looked to get paid and paid heavily. Obviously the ongoing Peppers saga must be handled by Fox and staff to make sure the Panthers have their energy focused on another NFC South crown. 

Carolina seems set on offense with the two-headed running monster of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who carried the Panthers' to the third-rated rushing attack in the NFL. They must get another 16 games this season out of Delhomme, who always has top target Steve Smith when he needs a big play.

With Atlanta and New Orleans on their heels, 2009 will be a pivotal season for coach John Fox and for the Carolina franchise. With their management seemingly going "all in" with their Drafts, the pressure is there for the Panthers to make the Playoffs and win there this time around.
